Activists, thought leaders, decision-makers, and all those who believe in justice for all come to Prism for deep reporting and honest insights on the most pressing injustices of our time—delivered through the lens of those who are most impacted.

While we are headquartered in California, we are a fully-remote team—with staff member locations ranging from the Bay Area, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and the US South.

Our approach

From everyday readers to movement leaders, we help people to see the full story of injustice, and to better understand what is broken, how to fix it, and who’s leading the way.

Our coverage deeply explores issues of racial justice, mass incarceration and policing, workers’ rights, gender justice, immigration, electoral justice, and the climate emergency. We report fully and accurately on the most pressing matters of our time by listening to and amplifying the experiences of people impacted by these issues. We’re led by and written for people of color, with a shared commitment to widen the lens on injustice. Prism’s approach to reporting is grounded in trust and relationships, centering the people and communities who experience injustices firsthand. We’re investing in this model by providing a platform for the next generation of journalists, storytellers, and thought leaders of color.

About the role

Prism is hiring a freelance Contributing Writer, Caregiving on a six-month contract basis, to regularly contribute to our coverage of caregiving, through the lenses of gender and economic justice. (To note! This is not a full-time position; this freelance, contract role contributes one to two reported news stories per month at roughly 1,200 words per piece.)

Our Contributing Writer, Caregiving role will cover caregiving, including childcare, elder care, and care for disabled people, while examining the root causes of gender and racial imbalances in caregiving and what economic justice would look like in this space, and what policy solutions and grassroots innovations can reshape the landscape and redistribute resources. Our focus will be to produce journalism that centers family caregivers, and their needs and demands for change, and stories of leadership and resilience both during this period of new and pressing challenges, through to the upcoming periods of reimagining and restructuring our society for the better.

The contributing writer will publish one to two pieces per month at approximately 1,200 words per piece, capped at nine pieces per six-month contract, with a mix of articles assigned by Prism editors and those proactively pitched by the writer. We’re seeking reporters who are fluent in a number of different modes of reporting and writing, including feature-style stories, Q&As, profiles, and explainers. Contributing writers should possess a deep well of story ideas, and must excel at working independently in a deadline-driven environment.

This is a temporary, six-month freelance contract position and pays $1,000 per month for a total of $6,000. Contributing writers may be offered the option to renew for an additional six months. The position is remote.

Our ideal contributing writer is a well-sourced, deeply empathetic journalist who wants to do a different kind of journalism. The ideal candidate has an intuitive sense of the news that matters to the communities Prism serves, and the skill, passion, and discipline to take the kernel of an idea and grow it into a full story that widens readers’ lens on an issue. The right candidate will be prepared to dig deep into the status quo and deliver a new kind of inclusive journalism.

Additional desired qualities include:

  • A demonstrated commitment to the issue areas we cover
  • Strong news judgment
  • Experience as an empathetic, nimble reporter and strong writer
  • Alignment with Prism’s mission and values

If you see yourself in some of the characteristics we’ve described—even if you may not have the exact experience you think we’re looking for—please reach out! We’d love to hear from you.
